Touring Arthur Avenue with Michele and Charles Scicolone
Though quick to plan a trip to faraway places, we sometimes overlook the delights to be found nearby. With this in mind, a group of New York Dames and their guests spent Saturday afternoon, April 17, exploring the Bronx's Arthur Avenue "Little Italy" neighborhood. The trip was organized by Dame Michele Scicolone and Charles Scicolone, Italian wine and food authorities, and Susan Birnbaum of Susansez NYC Walkabouts. As we walked and learned about the history and changing face of this colorful area, we munched on everything from Albanian bourek to freshly made mozzarella knots, watched demonstrations and met the people who prepared the food. The day ended with pastry (cannoli and cheesecake), coffee, and a song (*Oye Marie*) by Nonna Antoinette at the Arthur Avenue
Café. As we made our way home toting big bags of good things to eat, all agreed that this was a trip they would soon make again.
